AFTERCARE GUIDES

At Mavericks we offer 2 types of tattoo aftercare: Cream Healing Aftercare and Second Skin Aftercare

CREAM HEALING AFTERCARE

  1. You should keep the dressing on for two hour

  2. Make sure your hands are clean before you start cleaning your tattoo.

  3. Wash your tattoo with warm running water, showers are absolutely fine with a mild unscented antibacterial soap. the aim is to clean it and remove any dried blood or ink

  4. Pat dry with a clean paper towel, then allow to air dry.

  5. Apply a thin layer of ointment, we recommend Yayo aftercare which we sell for £5 . Avoid using petroleum and lanolin based creams, such as E45 or Vaseline.

  6. wrap your tattoo for the first few nights to avoid it drying out and staining your bedsheets

  7. Repeat steps 2 - 5 whenever the tattoo begins to feel dry, especially just before bed and when you wake up

It is important to keep your tattoo clean, but do not submerge or soak your tattoo, prolonged water exposure is unnecessary and increases infection risks.

Keep tattoo covered/wrapped if you're in a potentially dirty, dusty or oily environment.

Wear loose fitting clothing to minimise rubbing and irritation.

AVOID:

  • Do not submerge your tattoo in water for at least 2 - 3 weeks or until fully healed; no baths, no swimming pools, lakes, rivers or seas.

  • Do not use skin products on the treated area that have not been recommended by your tattoo artist, especially products that are not intended for open wound healing.

  • Do not share skin products.

  • Avoid direct sunlight and sun beds.

  • Do not get your tattoo dirty, if this does happen, wash your tattoo immediately as guided.

  • Do not scratch, touch, pick at your tattoo and cause a potential infection risk, this could also effect how your tattoo heals.

  • Do not poke at your tattoo with dirty hands, nor let anyone else.

  • Do not let animals lick or touch the treated area.

SECOND SKIN AFTERCARE

Second skin is a membrane which sticks over the skin and allows to tattoo to heal naturally with a greatly reduced risk of infection. Although relatively new to the tattoo industry it has been around for quite a long time and was originally used for burns patients to heal large sections of skin

  1. Leave the second skin for 7 days unless told otherwise by your artist

  2. wash your hands and remove the second skin, discomfort is expected as it is very sticky. by this time the tattoo should be mostly healed

  3. jump in the shower to remove all the sticky residue left by the second skin using soap to keep the tattoo clean

  4. cream lightly using Yayo cream, cocoa butter, coconut oil or another gentle moisturiser for a further 7 days

If the second skin peels off early for any reason, switch to using the regular cream healing aftercare

Second skin is waterproof so showering is fine, however we would still advise avoiding baths, swimming pools and the sea

air bubbles are fine - just leave them alone

oozing ink/plasma under the second skin is absolutely fine, even if you can no longer see the tattoo, don’t panic! it’s not going anywhere
